The Super Secret Society (2023)
The Super Secret Society: a Playable Play is an interactive, procedurally generated comedy with immersive elements designed for traditional theatre spaces. The performance explored the conflict between tradition and progress through the lens of the tension between AI and artists.
Each performance featured a unique guest performer from the local arts scene whose favorite cultural icon and perspective on the arts industry, along with the audience’s responses throughout the event, informed the specific narrative of the performance. Furthermore, an audience member was empowered throughout the event to determine the final narrative outcome of each show.
ChatGPT co-wrote the initial draft of the script with Bora “Max” Koknar and with a human devising team developing the the script further for performance. The production also featured live backstage use of ChatGPT to create bespoke text for each performance. The show was structured to create the illusion of a sentient artificial intelligence and incorporated interactions with the ‘sentient AI’ for performers and select audience members using Bluetooth-enabled wearable AR technology. The technology stack for the production also included additional AI tools, audio/video over ethernet for ‘remote’ performance via live video, interaction via mobile devices, and VR technology.
“An experimental and thought-provoking production so daring that a few boomers walked out. Punk AF. It was hella meta about the cultish esteem we give the history of art, the laughable pomp of education, and the strange inhibition of creation and action that comes from judgment. I ate it up, I loved it… What a memorable evening.”
